DVSA Syllabus // Element E of E
E. Practical On-Road Riding
Duration: Minimum 2 hours

Practical checklist
- 01
Roundabouts
Mirror-signal-position-speed-look, every time.
- 02
Junctions
Approach with appropriate position and speed; observe before commit.
- 03
Speed management
Match the limit without exceeding it. 28-29mph in a 30 is fine.
- 04
Filtering
Only when safe and legal. Don't filter past lorries near junctions.
- 05
Hazard response
React calmly to pedestrians, parked-car doors, and surface debris.
Common mistakes
- Sitting in the gutter to feel safe — it makes you invisible.
- Riding too slowly out of nerves and frustrating traffic behind you.
- Forgetting to cancel indicators on roundabouts.
Pass tips
- Breathe. The radio is supportive, not punitive.
- If you make a mistake, correct it and move on. One error rarely fails you.
- On finishing, you'll be issued a DL196 valid for 2 years. Frame it.
